Tirzepatide is a prescription medication administered once weekly by injection. It belongs to a class of medicines known as dual GIP and GLP-1 receptor agonists, which help regulate blood sugar levels, appetite, and body weight. Tirzepatide is FDA-approved for the treatment of Type 2 diabetes, chronic weight management, and moderate-to-severe obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in adults with obesity.
Brand Names
Tirzepatide is manufactured by Eli Lilly and Company and is marketed under two brand names:
-
Mounjaro – Approved to improve blood glucose control in individuals with Type 2 diabetes.
-
Zepbound – Approved for chronic weight management and certain patients with obesity-related obstructive sleep apnea.
Mechanism of Action
Tirzepatide works by activating receptors for two naturally occurring hormones involved in metabolism:
-
Glucose-Dependent Insulinotropic Polypeptide (GIP)
-
Glucagon-Like Peptide-1 (GLP-1)
Through these actions, tirzepatide:
-
Enhances insulin release when blood glucose levels rise.
-
Reduces glucose production by the liver.
-
Delays stomach emptying, promoting a longer feeling of fullness.
-
Influences appetite-regulating centers in the brain, helping decrease hunger and food cravings.

Semaglutide works on one gut receptor, and its primary effect is slowing the gut. It is a highly effective medication, but Tirzepatide is even more effective for weight loss. Tirzepatide has two ingredients: one similar to Semaglutide plus another ingredient, a GIP. The GIP inhibits hunger differently. It is shown to be more effective for weight loss than Semaglutide, with weight loss averaging 50 lbs in 72 weeks. Many have lost 20% of their body weight by adding Tirzepatide to their weight loss regimen. Tirzepatide also has less incidence of nausea and GERD.
Mounjaro, is FDA approved for obesity in diabetics and Zepbound is approved for obesity and sleep apnea. Both of these brands are marketed by Eli Lilly, and they are both identical, just labeled differently for marketing purposes. Tirzepatide is the most effective medication for inhibiting a person's appetite that is available at this time. When on any weight loss program, you will still be encouraged to increase your current activity, which will raise your metabolism and stimulate muscle conditioning. By exercising, you will gain lean muscle. Combining an increased metabolism with a decreased appetite results in weight loss. By changing your habits and increasing your metabolism, you will lose weight and maintain your new healthier weight.
Aside from reducing hunger and cravings, Tirzepatide has been shown to have anti-inflammatory effects, reducing chronic disease risk, lowering blood pressure and lipid profiles, reducing risk of heart disease and related conditions, improving insulin sensitivity and reducing Hgb A1C.
There is no magic combination of foods or restrictions of a food group that is sustainable. Over 80% of those who lose weight by dieting will regain the lost weight within 12 months. The reality is, the only way to lose weight is EAT LESS and MOVE MORE. Many achieve weight loss only after bariatric surgery. Unfortunately, as much as 30% of bariatric surgery patient do not achieve their goal weight. Additionally, there are multiple risks involved in having bariatric surgery. Bariatric surgery is the most permanent way of enforcing dietary limitation, simply by decreasing the size of the stomach. Despite the surgery, many continue to overeat and struggle with obesity.
Studies have shown that people who stop tirzepatide are likely to gain some, if not all, of the weight they have lost.
